Solar power is one of the most reliable forms of alternative energy. That is why it is at the top of most Prepper’s equipment purchase lists. The problem is; it remains at the top of our purchase list and is continually skipped over. This is because getting started in solar power can be confusing, and even more expensive. But, what if it was not that confusing, and depending on your needs, not that expensive… Would you take the plunge?

Airway management can be any number of procedures intended to assist a casualty victim in maintaining a patent (open) airway so that the victim can either breathe on their own or, receive ventilation through mechanical means. Maintaining a victim’s airway can be a very simple, or an extremely complicated procedure, dependent upon any number of factors. As your group’s emergency medical caregiver, you will have to understand these factors in order to assess the victim’s airway condition and then make the most appropriate determination as to how the airway should be best managed. If a victim cannot breathe, irreversible brain damage will result within four to six minutes. Death will not be far behind.

After you grasp the fundamentals for long-term food storage, dehydrating foods is simple. Getting started can be challenging, but what is not challenging to us Preppers? We constantly debate which purchases to make, whether it is clothing, firearms, or outfitting our survival bag. And, it is no different when tackling your food storage plan. Do you purchase canned foods, prepared meals, dehydrated foods, or dehydrate and can foods yourself? The survival food manufacturers understand the complexities of doing it on your own, and they have built a comfortable profit margin into their pricing. 

The Emergency Lighting System (ELS) was designed to provide a valued Prepper Link member with a lighting system that can be remotely activated, that utilizes energy efficient lights, and provides a “base” solar power system. Additionally, the system was designed so the user can add more components over time. When we designed the ELS, we took the concepts and lessons learned from the $150 Solar Kit, put the components and wiring methods into a different enclosure, and added additional capability. The result is a modular emergency lighting system, which is turned on/off by a keyless entry remote type switch, is charged by the sun, and can be easy expanded.

Fire prevention is an often overlooked and underestimated preparedness issue. Let’s face it; fire safety is near the bottom of our preparedness concerns. But, what if you have a year’s worth of food, 6 months of water stored, all of the ammunition to protect your family for multiple generations, and you neglect fire safety? What if your home burns down, or your survival gear is destroyed because your tent is too close to the camp fire? Whether your plan is to Bug In or it involves a tent colony on some remote land, ensuring you have a strong fire prevention strategy will protect your belongings and maybe even save your life if that fire were to strike. 

Hopefully, you and your family will remain safe during a grid-down situation. However, if injuries are sustained,  you will need to closely monitor the injury and the patient's vitals. Here is our take on a first aid evaluation form (a modified version of the Wilderness First Aid document). This two page handout has fields which can be filled out following a trauma event or even a common illness. Think of it as the same form used in your doctor's office, but has been modified for the layman.

In your capacity as the medic for your retreat or Bug Out Location (BOL), or in any situation you may find yourself in, you may have a requirement to use an IV to treat a patient. Intravenous therapy, or IV therapy, is the administration of liquid substances directly into a vein. The word intravenous simply means "within a vein", but is most commonly used to refer to IV therapy. IV therapy can be intermittent or continuous. Continuous administration is called an intravenous drip. Compared with other routes of replenishing liquids, the intravenous route is the fastest way to deliver fluids and medications throughout the body.

An often overlooked aspect of survival is first aid. Sure, most of us carry a small first aid kit in our Survival Bag or vehicle, but how long would you expect this kit to last? Even if you had a moderate amount of medical supplies stored at your home, you run the risk of exhausting your supply in just a few days. For those that take first aid and medical treatment to the extreme, you understand the importance of long term medical care.

After the success of our $150 Small Solar Power Solution, we wanted to take it to the next level. The small solar power solution was intended for emergencies; running small LED lights, power small 12 volt appliances, and for charging batteries and devices. Our main goals were to educate our users by identifying the required solar components, and demonstrate how assemble a budget, yet practical, solar power system. Going into the first project we understood the small solar power system’s limitations, and also understood our user base would like to see a larger system. Our next project, The Large Mobile Solar Power System, will demonstrate how to build a more capable system, which can meet moderate daily power requirements during extended power outages. While, our example system is not capable of running every power-hungry device in your home, it is great for running the “necessary” equipment during a grid down situation.

Our next project will focus on making power efficient LED lights, and we will do this on a budget of $15 per light. Our LED lights can be powered by a small 12 volt battery or incorporated into your large alternative energy battery bank. By following our guide, you can make 12 volt LED puck lights, pendants, or modify an existing lamp base for around $3 - $8, or you can build a complete light for $15.

So, you have set up a retreat, and want to know all of the medical conditions for your members. Use our medical screening form to track your member's medical issues, know which prescription medications they require, and to identify any future medical issues.

The original system is capable of running small 12 volt devices, LED lights, and charging electronics. While we could stop here, what fun would that be? This article will demonstrate doubling the battery capacity, and a unique method for adding additional solar panels and power outputs to the system. Additionally, we will demonstrate how to use these add-on modular components with a larger solar power system.
